This museum is housed in the original Railway Depot. Outside in the years the original tracks from the Transcontinental and the Old Ghan can still be seen. Visitors can touch and sit in various locomotives and carriages.

Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre

YMCA Building
The historic former YMCA building has sprung back to life as a museum. Unique displays of Meldonfield Miniatures, Historic Cobb & Co coaches, and the original Petersburg Railway Station built to scale are a few of the attractions.

Federation Quilt
The Federation Quilt is beautifully displayed in the Town Hall. The 2x3m wall hanging is of patchwork construction which took approx 2,000 hours to make.

Bob the Railway Dog
Located in front of the Town Carriage Museum, you can admire the sculpture of Bob the Railway Dog and enjoy his garden. Bob was a delightful little character loved by all the railway workers in the late 1800s.

Heritage Walk
Enjoy a leisurely walk. This walk, or approx. 1.6km, incorporates the many historic buildings, landmarks and sites in the vicinity of the Main Street.

Printing Office
Here, where The Petersburg Times was printed from 1891, visitors can experience how in the days gone by newspapers, cards and all kinds of paperwork were printed.

Heritage Rail Trail
The new Heritage Rail Trail offers an outback journey like no other. You’ll follow the remains of the Broken Hill to Port Pirie railway line – a relic of the steam age, a 400km piece of history.

Town Carriage Museum
The Town Carriage Museum is a tourism experience that explains the history of our town through wonderfully researched and presented information panels. Travel back in time in the carriage’s two compartments and enjoy a ‘virtual’ train ride experience.

The Burg
‘The Burg’ is part of the Multi Award Winning Peterborough Newsagency. It contains a 22m long mural depicting the history of the town as well as numerous visual displays.

Sound & Light Show
The Sound and Light show is played in the industrial shadows of the heritage-listed ‘Roundhouse’ – a huge shedding area that circles an 85-foot turntable. Enjoy a story of astonishing grown and sudden decline. Not to be missed.

Dragons Rest
Not far from Steamtown is Dragons Rest Habitat Garden. Home to a variety of lizards, birds and insects, this garden is biodiversity at work. Take a relaxing stroll, discover unusual artworks and enjoy the peace and tranquility.

Town Hall
Marvel at one of the largest heritage listed Town Halls in country South Australia. Commissioned by a very proud outgoing council in 1926, the Town Hall was completed in 1927.

Model Railway
You must come and have a look at the working model railway based on the Peterborough railway yards c1968. Located in ‘The Burg’ which is part of the Peterborough Newsagency.

Y Class Locomotive
On display in the centre of town is an 1880s Y Class Steam Locomotive. Climb on and imagine the days gone by, shoveling coal into the oven, blowing the whistle and getting soot in the eyes.

Victoria Park
This is a tranquil man made park named after Queen Victoria on her 60th Jubilee in 1897. An ideal place to relax, feed the ducks, let the children run and play, and have a picnic or BBQ lunch.

Peterborough Motorcycle & Antique Museum
The Peterborough Motorcycle and Antique Museum is home to 62 great motorcycles to view and a wonderful array of antiques.

Greg Duggan Nature Reserve & Tank Hill Lookout
Named after Greg Duggan, one of SA’s most gifted and knowledgeable amateur naturalists, this reserve covers 10 hectares with a comfortable walking path and amazing range of flora and fauna.
